As you battle the bulge, here's some good news for you. You can truly lose weight and keep it off. I'm aware that almost everyone makes this same promise, however, I am pleased to announce that by following my six weight loss tips you will become slimmer. You will discover that you can lose weight and keep it off without ever returning to the weight gain struggle again.

First let's settle with the fact that, you're weight is your decision. This is all about you being satisfied with you. The goal is not to get you into a size 6, unless that is your heart's desire. The goal is to get you into a size or at a weight where you are satisfied with yourself.

Next you have to erase all of your past failures and horrible attempts at the same. Today is a new day, so, let's begin fresh with optimism. You must take on a new mindset. You have to say to yourself words like: “I can do this”, “I can lose weight”, “Nothing is impossible”….

You'll need to approach food in a different way. Don't think about getting as much in you as you possibly can. You're not at the “last supper”. You will eat again. I think food is overrated anyway. It's really not that often that after a great meal you 're as satisfied as you thought you'd be. Food is not as great as commercials, or even our imaginations make it out to be. So, put food in its proper perspective. We eat to live, we don't live to eat.

Now if you're ready, here are my six weight loss tips that will be sure to make you a weight loss believer.

1. First eat a small breakfast every morning whether you're hungry or not. This jump starts your metabolism.

2.Only eat fruit as snacks. Say good bye to cakes, cookies, pie, ice cream and candy.

3. Eat 6 small meals, instead of 1 huge one.

4. Have your last meal of the evening by 6:00 p.m.

5.Drink only water as your beverage

6.Go outside and play every day. Instead of organized exercise you regret doing, have fun, as long as you move. Just move, move, and move some more because movement is important. You can swim, shoot some hoops, ride your bike…..

How's your New Year's diet coming along? If you find you're slipping back into bad habits and the pounds aren't coming off, Denise Austin's new book, "Denise's Daily Dozen," might be just the jump-start you need to get going again.

Austin's book promises big, saying that on her three-week diet and exercise program you can lose up to 12 pounds in just two weeks.

The secret? Consuming just 1,200 to 1,300 calories a day for women (1,500 to 1,600 for men) in the first two weeks of the diet, doing at least 12 minutes of exercises each day and walking (or running, biking or swimming) 12 miles a week.

It takes commitment to follow any weight-loss program, especially one with such a strict caloric intake, but the fitness guru uses her trademark upbeat approach to turn it into something that sounds almost fun. Each day's exercises are different (Monday is a "cardio fat blast," Sunday a yoga stretch workout) and are performed for only a minute apiece, so boredom is not an issue. Austin sells the pleasures of healthy eating and shares easy ways to get more active.

Her well-organized book divides up chapters by days of the week and offers nutritionist-devised menus (with simple recipes conveniently nearby); shopping lists; weight-loss testimonials; practical and inspirational tips; illustrated cardio, toning and flexibility workouts; and additional moves to tame tension, work abs and boost metabolism.

As the title suggests, things come by the dozen in this book: a dozen foods to eat daily (three servings each of vegetables, fruits and proteins, two of grains and one of a healthy fat); a dozen meals you can make in 12 minutes; a dozen ways to boost motivation, get better sleep, eat more fiber, get past cravings, soothe sore muscles, relax.

The idea is that the program will help you form healthier habits that you can then incorporate into your daily life. But will you? Austin gives you everything you need to do it. The rest, of course, is up to you.

Her remarks, coming on the anniversary of her first year as first lady, marked the beginning of what Mrs. Obama has said will be a major initiative on her part to raise awareness about childhood obesity.

A formal rollout of her program is planned for next month. Mrs. Obama has said she will look to businesses and nonprofits, community and health centers, educators, religious leaders and government to help.

Childhood obesity rates have tripled in the past 30 years, and the latest figures show that about one in three children are overweight. Nearly 2 in 10, or 17 percent, are obese, or dangerously overweight.

“The statistics still never fail to take my breath away,” Mrs. Obama told the standing-room only audience.

The first lady said she knows budgets are tight everywhere, but she said the nation can't afford to continue on the current path, which means that nearly half of all Americans will be obese in just 10 years.

Higher obesity rates, she said, pose a threat to the economy and the nation's collective health through increased spending on obesity-related conditions like diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

“Leadership is about having the foresight and the courage to make those sacrifices and investments in the short run that pay big dividends, often paying for themselves many times over in the long run,” she said.

Cutting back on calories and adding or increasing exercise are proven to assist with weight loss, but they do not provide enough motivation for people who have been repeatedly unsuccessful at reaching their weight-loss goals.

But What About Senator Gillibrand's Baby Weight??

“Like every new mom, it takes time, it takes time, to get back in shape and be yourself again,” Gillibrand told the New York Daily News. And then she Revealed Her Diet Secrets!

You know how yesterday we suggested that, just maybe, the culture was a leetle too interested in strangers' “baby weight?” Like, more interested in “losing the weight” and “regaining the body” than, say, an upcoming primary battle? Well. No one stands corrected.

On the one hand, as long as we must prolong this absurd conversation, at least Gillibrand's comments on the subject are relatively wholesome. “Most of us are not Heidi Klum and Angelina Jolie who look great the next day – for me, it took a good year and a half to get off all my Henry weight.” (Henry is her baby. Elsewhere in the article she refers to her “Theo weight,” too. This is either better or worse than any alternative we've heard.) But, that said, the Senator still works out five mornings a week, runs and plays tennis.

The senator said she began focusing on her diet in August when she finished breast-feeding Henry. She eats fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish, aiming for roughly 1,200 calories a day. “I write down everything I eat,” she said.

Her goal, she says, is to “get back into the wardrobe she used before having her oldest child, Theo, 6.” For a woman who's achieved this level of public success, I'm guessing she can achieve this, too – if she wants. It's somewhat dispiriting that given a public platform, such a visible woman not merely plays into a post-weight hysteria which is frankly none of anyone's business and has even less to do with politics than Hollywood, but also subscribes to success-as-dress-size rather than general health and well-being. And calorie-counting, for my money, should be banned from print. We know people gain weight when they have babies; that's Nature. The amazing thing is that each instance of public gain and loss is still met with wonder and fascination. And that this piece will likely influence at least one voter.

Is the Atkins Diet For You?
The Atkins Diet is the grand daddy of the quick weight loss diets. It's based on severely limiting carbohydrates. Carbs are processed by the body to become sugar or glucose in the blood stream. Glucose is used by the body for energy and has to be released by insulin. If the carbs consumed for the day aren't enough, the body transforms the fat it has stored back into glucose for energy. That's the basis of the Atkin's Diet. Severely limit carbohydrates in the daily diet and the body has to fall back on its fat storage for energy.

Carbs also cause the blood sugar to spike which signals the body to produce insulin to remove the sugar from the bloodstream. This causes the blood sugar to drop which results in a craving for more carbs to raise it back up. Keeping the blood sugar levels at an even keel means the feelings of hunger are lessened.

The Atkins Diet's initial two week kick start program only allows 20 grams of carbs per day. The carbs from fiber are netted – subtracted from the total carb count. So for example, while 1/4 cup of blueberries has a total carb count of 5.1 grams, only 4.1 grams are counted because 1 gram is from fiber.

Protein such as fish, chicken, beef, and pork contains 0 grams. The diet also allows cheese and eggs. Seafood is tricky, some, like shrimp, have 0 grams and others like oysters, pack a walloping 12.5 grams per 6 oz.

You can have limited amounts, up to 3 cups daily, of green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, kale, broccoli, asparagus, and cabbage. Fruit is not allowed. To give you examples of carb counts, an apple has a net 16 grams of carbs, a slice of wheat bread has 12 carbs. Alcohol in any form is not allowed during the kickoff stage. An exercise period of 30 minutes per day is mandatory.

After the initial two weeks, carbs are gradually and slowly added back to the diet, fruits and vegetables first. Some vegetables like sweet potatoes (19 grams) and corn (14 grams per 1/3 cup) contain too many carbs to ever become a regular part of the diet. The maximum level of carbs at stage two should be between 30 to 35. The objective is to continue losing weight but at a lesser rate than the initial two week period. If the weight loss stops the number of carbs being consumed has to decrease again.

The Atkin's maintenance diet is at a level of carbs where you've stopped losing weight but don't gain weight. It maxes out at about 40 grams of carbs per day. A turkey sandwich with mayo and sliced tomatoes is about 30 grams of carbs. A medium pear has 21 and one cup of 2% milk has 11.

Sugar, processed foods, flour and starches, such as potatoes and rice are pretty much off limits forever on the Atkins Diet. Most fruits have to be eaten in moderation if at all and certain vegetables as well.

The South Beach Diet: Is It the Diet For You?

The South Beach Diet is similar to the Atkins Diet in that it has an initial two week phase I period that drastically reduces carbs. The difference between Atkins and South Beach is that there are good carbs and bad carbs. The glycemic index of a food is what counts. The glycemic index is how much a food increases blood sugar compared to the amount that same quantity of white bread would increase blood sugar.

A spike in the blood sugar or glucose, signals the pancreas to make more insulin. The insulin's job is to get the sugar out of the blood stream into the organs for energy or into storage. The body stores glucose as fat. Keeping the blood sugar from spiking means less insulin is produced which means the sugars are absorbed slowly resulting in a steady level of decreasing sugar levels rather than a rush. Low blood sugar leads to cravings for sugary foods and over eating. And the cycle starts again.

Bad carbs spike the blood sugar. Good carbs don't. Good carbs are those from foods which contain a lot of fiber, such as whole grains or contain fiber and water such as fruit. The body takes longer to digest the good carbs so they enter the blood stream more slowly.

The longer food takes to digest the better. For example a piece of raw broccoli is better than cooked because your body has to work harder to digest the raw broccoli. The faster carbohydrates are digested, the more quickly they're turned into sugar – glucose, and the more likely they will be turned to stored fat.

Fiber, protein and fats slow down the digestive system which means the blood sugar rises slowly and falls slowly. The tendency to over eat is diminished and the onset of hunger delayed.

The South Beach Diet limits fats and oils and encourages the consumption of lean cuts of meat and low fat cheeses. Vegetables and fruits are allowed after the initial phase I – two week period. Whole grains can be added back including whole grain bread. White breads, cookies, cakes, rice, potatoes, and sugar are off limits except for special occasions.

The South Beach Diet is a change in eating patterns for life, but other than the forbidden processed foods, white flour, and sugar, the diet is reasonably manageable. It allows a broader selection of foods than the Atkins diet.

Who wins the battle?

It depends on your lifestyle and preferences. The Atkins Diet is easier to understand, but is more limiting in the choice of foods allowed. The South Beach Diet allows a greater variety, including fruit, but can get confusing determining which carbs are good and which are bad.

Even though I don't have any problem with erectile dysfunction (ED), I was curious about Viagra, as I imagine most men are. So, I decided to see if I could get some and give it a try; these are my experiences.

Since I wasn't really in the mood to try asking a doctor in person for a prescription for Viagra, I thought I would try ordering it online. If you actually bring this up with your doctor you may be requested to try a penile cuff first to confirm that you have an erectile problem. This is basically a small Velcro cuff that is put loosely on your penis before you go to sleep. Since men typically experience several erections at night while sleeping, your penis will expand and partly separate the cuff. Having erections at night would tend to show that the problem was perhaps more psychological than physical. However, the technical definition of an adequate erection is 80% of normal firmness and most doctors would not be able to determine this. Even most urologists would be unable to measure actual erectile firmness. They too would tend to simply go by anecdotal information from the patient about ability to achieve erection and difficulty with penetration caused by lack of firmness. In cases where ED is caused by damage to the internal pudendal artery or by poor blood circulation drugs like Viagra may not help. However, there is some encouraging information that Viagra can help when the problem is caused by trauma to the cavernous nerves such as from surgery for prostate cancer.

Since I didn't want to discuss this with a doctor in person I did searches on the internet to find an online source that would sell Viagra. I found a place in the US that would sell online. I had to fill out a brief questionnaire along with the information for the tentative order. Naturally, I fibbed a bit and said that I had erectile problems when, of course, I don't. Sure enough, my description was accepted and a doctor on their end wrote a prescription to allow them to fill the order. The process is pretty simple but it is not exactly cheap. The pills cost quite a bit apiece and there is the shipping charge along with an extra fee for the prescription to fill the order. Since Viagra is a prescription drug they won't fill the order without a prescription. Ten tablets of 100mg Viagra typically costs a minimum of $70 so $7 per pill. You can get a better price if you buy 30 pills for $140 which would be $4.67 per pill. However, there will also be shipping charges plus an additional fee to have the doctor on their end write the prescription. The doctor's fee will bring the price up to at least $5 per pill.

So, I wondered about the generic brands of Viagra. Naturally, the maker of real Viagra gives all sorts of dire warnings about obtaining anything but 100% patented Viagra. However, I knew that several big drug companies in India make a large number of US drugs under license and these are considered exactly the same as the US versions. So, it seemed reasonable to me that if these companies could make so many other drugs to full FDA specifications that they could probably handle generic sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra. I did some research online and found out that generic Viagra is sold in India under the brand names Silagra, Kamagra, Edegra, Zenegra, and Caverta. I was concerned that a foreign online ordering site might just be a scam like the Nigerian scams I receive almost daily. Recently, I even filled out a form online for a free eBay wholesalers kit. They then called me and told me that they were ready to ship it right out just as soon as I paid the $1.85 shipping charge. Naturally, I wasn't about to give credit card or banking information to someone who called me so I had to pass on their offer. Likewise, if you get emails that talk about low prices for Viagra don't order anything from them. You can't really trust a spammer. However, I had no trouble doing a search and finding places online that sell these Indian brands. The process was quite similar to the US order: fill out an even briefer questionnaire and make an order. The overseas orders have shipping charges but don't seem to charge a doctors fee. The big difference is that these Indian brands cost about one third of what real Viagra costs. Since the prescription for my genuine Viagra was for 100mg tablets I ordered the same thing in the other brands. Typical prices I've seen for generic Viagra for 30 100mg tablets is $60 or $2 per pill. I ordered Silagra and one of the other brands and some sildenafil citrate Soft-Tabs which are supposed to dissolve more quickly.

Just like my US order, all of my overseas orders arrived with the correct number of tablets and there were no phantom charges on my credit card. So there was no obvious attempt to rip me off. However, that still left the question of whether the Indian brands were really the same as genuine Viagra. The Sildenafil and the Soft-Tabs both came in individually sealed blister packs the way that most over-the-counter gel tabs are sold. However, the other brand simply came loose in a ziplock bag. This did seem a little unprofessional, however, it did occur to me that the capped plastic pharmacy bottle that my US order came in probably didn't protect the pills anymore than the sealed ziplock bag. Now with genuine Viagra I had something to compare the generics with. It was time to try the genuine Viagra and see what it did if anything.

Since I don't actually have any erectile problems and I, in fact, have a much higher than average libido I did wonder if I would notice anything from the Viagra. However, I can now safely say that even without ED, it definitely had an effect on me. It seems to take the pills at least half an hour to start working for me and they seem to last about five hours. I've seen it suggested that it can take an hour to start working and perhaps it would right after eating. There were noticeable sideffects. The side effects for me included a feeling of having the blood rush to my head. This gave me a small headache and gave me a feeling of pressure in my throat. It also had the odd side effect of making the light look more blue. Also, with only slight exertion I would get red in the face. However, the intended effect was there as well. Viagra won't just give you an erection; you still have to be aroused in some way for that to happen. However, I noticed that it took less arousal to give me an erection; I definitely got an erection more quickly than typical. Also, after reaching orgasm, I was able to get another erection more quickly than typical. So, in terms of the effect it seemed to give me erections more quickly and to allow quicker recovery. The side effects are not that pleasant but I knew after the first test to take some pain reliever before taking the Viagra. However, you should eat some saltines or drink some milk to keep your stomach from being upset. Since these are 100mg tablets you can also try cutting these in half and see if 50mgs has enough effect. This would reduce the side effects to some extent and if 50mgs isn't enough taking the second half will give the full effect in another 30 minutes. Sadly, the 50mg tablets are not half the price of the 100mg so it still makes sense to buy 100mg tablets and a good pill cutter even if 50mgs works for you. Pill cutters typically use a razor blade to make the cut so handle with care. Also, after the pill is cut you definitely need to store the unused half in a sealed container.

So, I then tried each of the other three generic brands that I had bought. Unlike the dire warnings from the Real Viagra website (which I've included as a link) I have to say that all of the generics that I tried worked, including the ones that came loose in a ziplock bag. There was no difference between the generics and the genuine Viagra that I could detect. They all seemed to have exactly the same erectile effect and the same side effects. The Soft-Tabs weren't really worth the extra price since even though they dissolve more quickly, they still take about the same amount of time to take effect. I suppose if it weren't illegal to obtain drugs from overseas sources, I would certainly consider the Indian generics since they seem to basically be the same as real Viagra. In particular, the packaging on the Silagra was very professional. The tablets are individually sealed and the foil is printed with the active ingredient, sildenafil citrate and the dosage. It contains the manufacturer's name and address and when the tablets were packed along with the expiration date. The foil package also contains consumer warning information like not to take more than 4 pills a day. What is particularly interesting though is that all of the printed information is in English. This seems to suggest that the factory always intended to sell the product in English speaking countries. For example, I would bet that Silagra is considered a normal brand in both Australia and Canada and probably England as well. Nevertheless, Silagra is currently illegal to important into the US. Naturally, any version of Viagra will contain sildenafil citrate and will have the same warnings and precautions as real Viagra. These warnings and precautions can be seen on the Viagra website which I've linked to.

In the United States, gynecologists attribute a leading cause of female disorders and complications to a condition known as bacterial vaginosis. Instead, it is the sexual activity which results in an abnormal balance of vaginal bacteria, leading to bacterial vaginosis.

To treat bacterial vaginosis, a gynecologist will usually recommend a strong and regular daily dose of the healthy cultures found in yogurt as these work to promote healthy vaginal bacteria. A course of antibiotics, such as Flagyl or clindamycin may also be indicated. While there is nothing on the market that will cure bacterial vaginosis with a 100 percent guarantee, these products will work to keep symptoms at bay and work to restore the healthy balance of vaginal bacteria.

When treated, the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis is quite common. While this is not an indication of anything a woman has done inappropriately in terms of health, it should not be ignored. With more than 80 percent of women suffering from a recurrence of BV, visits to the gynecologist may become quite frequent until the condition is fully resolved and vaginal bacteria is back within normal spectrums. Of important note, especially for pregnant women suffering from bacterial vaginosis, is the risk of complication to the fetus when using Flagyl. As a result, pregnant women, suffering from bacterial vaginosis, should restrict treatment to healthy doses of yogurt coupled with clindamycin.

As with any gynecological complication, women suffering from abnormal health should always seek out the advice and direction of a healthcare professional before purchasing over-the-counter products in self treatment. Age spots are skin discolorations, flat or convex, which appear over time. A very common age spot is called a seborrheic keratosis (SK). SKs are found on the face, neck, trunk, arms and legs. Size varies from a few mm in diameter or 10 mm or more. They may be white, tan, black or match the surrounding skin.

SKs appear to be “stuck on” the skin. In fact, some SKs can be peeled off the skin without bleeding. SKs readily respond by disappearing after freezing treatments with liquid nitrogen. Sebum is an oily secretion of glands around hair shafts and bulbs, and pores. Production of sebum, incorporated into cell build-ups forming an SK, make it appear greasy, with plugged pores and varying pigmentation.

On forearm surfaces with extra UV irradiation thins the skin, allowing pigmented lesions known as “liver spots”to form after microscopic bleeding into the skin caused by minor trauma.

Another pigmented skin lesion is the actinic keratosis (AK), which is induced by UV skin injury. AKs are most often seen on the face, ears, neck, and upper chest and forearms and especially the tops of the hands. Rubbing them lightly feels like sandpaper. Successful treatment is available.

Melanoma is a pigmented skin lesion, demanding rapid diagnosis and treatment. Basal cell skin cancers are found in skin earlier exposed to UV rays especially around the nose, eyes, and lips. They are usually pearly in appearance, and rarely pigmented. Mohs surgery is required for cure. Squamous cell skin cancer comes from UV ray injury. It is often red, on the face, neck, arms, or trunk.

Exposure to sun rays in the formative years of life brings damage to sensitive cells by ultraviolet irradiation, clipping DNA strands, later neoplasms escape the waning immune system of the aging body.

Fair-skinned people are most vulnerable. Prevention here too outweighs cure.

Use solar-protective clothing, sunscreen, and caution going out between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. in spring, summer and fall.

I am fair-skinned, living at 40o N. latitude, central North America, and use Aveeno sunscreen SPF 70 on sun-exposed areas, when engaging in outdoor work from late spring through early fall.

These preventive measures will help lower your risk for skin cancer, and reduce actinic lines and wrinkles.

Because of its name, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) has obtained a rather nasty reputation among civilians and medical personnel alike. The patient may feel a strong urge to move limbs at regular intervals, and in some instances will experience pain or “tingling” sensations. Symptoms can begin in childhood and may affect the patient through adulthood.

Although restless leg syndrome can occur in any body part, the most common area is the legs – hence, the name. Because the sensations felt vary among patients, the precise feelings are not easy to identify. Some patients report itching or progressive tingling, while others report a strong desire to simply move, rather than a physical sensation.

The urges and sensations felt as a result of restless leg syndrome will be relieved – however temporarily – when the patient moves the body part. It can be as simple as a slight shift in position or it can be relieved through walking or stretching. In order to prevent the sensations as often as possible, many patients have turned to performing yoga or other exercises right before getting into bed.

If the patient attempts to sit or lie still, the symptoms will invariably worsen the longer the muscles remain inactive. Sitting or lying down quietly does nothing to relieve the symptoms, and will aggravate the sensations and desire to move.

Although 70% of sufferers claim that the symptoms only materialize during the night, some report the odd sensations at all hours of the day, and in all positions. Still, restless leg syndrome becomes worse at night, even if the symptoms are experienced throughout the day.

The most frustrating aspect of restless leg syndrome is that most people who have it don’t realize there is a problem. Most assume that they are the only ones who experience the strange sensations and urges, and are more likely to keep silent about them in front of family or even their physician. Some relief is experienced when a patient realizes that it is a common problem, but the symptoms do not go away.

Research is young for restless leg syndrome, and therefore little is known about it. Restless leg syndrome is considered an “idiopathic” disorder, which means that there is no identifiable cause for the affliction. This makes it difficult to treat, and even more difficult to understand. Patients often become frustrated because they are unable to find the right combination of lifestyle changes to eliminate or even ease the symptoms.

The most common way to relieve restless leg syndrome is by a simple “guess and check” method. Identify your activities that occur most often before the sensations begin, and try eliminating those factors one-by-one to see if their absence causes a decrease or pause in the symptoms. For example, some patients have linked caffeine before bed with restless leg syndrome. Staying away from coffee or sodas for at least two hours before bedtime might cause a dramatic change in restless leg syndrome.

Common causes include, but are not limited to sugar, caffeine, seizure medication, OTC drugs, recreational drugs, alcohol, vigorous exercise, magnesium, B-12 folate, calcium and fatty or greasy foods.

If the symptoms are dramatically disrupting your life, you should see a doctor about restless leg syndrome. Your physician may be able to help you identify the cause for your affliction and/or help to relieve it. Over the next three or four years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to review and approve several new medications that may or may not have a positive impact on relieving restless leg syndrome.
